HAMILTON

 Charlotte Thomas

Charlotte Hamilton of Sewickley, age 79, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 after coping with COPD for several years.  Known as “Char”, she was a friend to many and loved her faith, family and community.   She served on the boards of Friends of the Sewickley Public Library and Union Aid Society and was a member of the Child Health Association.  She was a founding member of Christ Church at Grove Farm, led their KnitWits ministry and traveled to Uganda with church mission teams. Charlotte was born in Pittsburgh on August 20, 1936 to the late William Burney and Melinda (Moore) Thomas.  She had three older brothers Burney of Pittsburgh (deceased), John of Houston and Frank and a sister Melinda Miller of Ligonier. She received a B.S. in Nursing from Bucknell and Johns Hopkins Universities.  As an RN, she worked as a hospice nurse and also worked on radical nursing procedures for cancer patients at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Char loved pets and her veterinarian hired her to assist him with minor surgical operations and pet care. Charlotte met her husband James L. Hamilton, III at Bucknell in 1955 and they married after graduation in Ben Avon on June 13, 1959.  They served for three years with the U.S. Marine Corps, then in Pittsburgh and Washington D.C. with US Steel and USX Corporation.  They retired in Sewickley in 2001 and would have been married for 57 years in June.  She loved to read, travel, chat and spend time with her family. She is survived by her husband, daughters Susan (Cliff) Aleshire of Sewickley, Jane Hamilton of Chicago, Rebecca (John) Visser of Raleigh, and Melinda (Tim) Stubbs of Goring On Thames, UK as well as ten grandchildren and one grandson-in-law. Charlotte looked forward to celebrating her 80th birthday with her family.  They loved her and treasured their time with her.  She will be remembered as a caring and devoted friend, mother and wife.  She was a blessing and has been blessed.  Now she is at peace with her Lord. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary of Christ Church at Grove Farm, Sewickley, PA.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Christ Church at Grove Farm, Friends of the Sewickley Public Library , Union Aid Society or Animal Friends. Arrangements by Copeland’s.
