Welcome to the memorial page for

John "Jack" L. Marlovits

January 3, 1939 ~ December 11, 2017 (age 78) 78 Years Old

John L. “Jack” Marlovits, devoted husband, loving father and a man of deep faith, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 11, 2017. A humble man, he is dearly remembered for his disciplined character, dry wit, and his dedication to his family and friends.

Jack was born in Millvale, PA on January 3, 1939 to the late George and Rose (Prascovits) Marlovits who were young immigrants from Austria. Born above his family’s tavern, Jack and his twin brother Joseph were the first set of twins born in the City of Pittsburgh in 1939.  He attended grammar school at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church and was a 1956 graduate of Shaler High School. As a young man, Jack was an avid baseball player and a member of the Wible Wildcats where he played second base and created life-long friendships. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1960. Upon graduation from Pitt, he entered the US Army and served in the Army Medical Service at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1966.

In 1961, Jack joined the Mellon Bank Corporation where he enjoyed a long and fruitful career within the retail banking sector. After working for several years in Beaver Falls, PA, he launched Mellon’s highly successful, first branch in Beaver, PA. He spent many years of his career as the manager of the Sewickley branch of Mellon and retired at age 55 as an Assistant Vice President. Beloved by his colleagues, Jack was a caring, considerate manager who enjoyed the respect and admiration of his peers.

A long-time member of the Sewickley community, Jack served on the Sewickley Chamber of Commerce where he spearheaded business redevelopment efforts in the Village. After retiring from Mellon, he embarked on a second career spanning 15 years at the Sewickley Heights Golf Club. As a natural people person and old drill sergeant, Jack found great pleasure in serving as Caddy Master and Pro Shop Assistant and enjoyed rich and jovial relationships with members and staff alike.

A deeply spiritual man, Jack was a member of Saint James Catholic Church in Sewickley. He served for many years on the parish Finance Committee and led Men’s Retreats at St. Paul’s Retreat House. Additionally, he was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.

More than anything, Jack loved his family. He is preceded in death eight months to the day by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn (Walsh). He was a loving caregiver to her as she battled dementia in her final years. He is the father of four children: Gregory Marlovits (Cathy), Erin Marlovits-Rodgers (Floyd), Shawn Marlovits (Christine Kotarba) and Tara Marlovits.  Known as Pappy, he was a loving and cherished grandfather to Max, Sara, and Ella.  Jack was the youngest of five children and twin brother of Joseph Marlovits (Agnes), and brother of Helen Bartz (Del), Steve Marlowe (Mary Ann), and Ann Connor (the late Frank); also nieces and nephews.

The family will be receiving visitors on Monday, December 18 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Copeland’s Sewickley, 702 Beaver St. followed by Mass at 10AM on Tuesday, December 19 at Saint James Catholic Church, 200 Walnut St., Sewickley. Rev Thomas J. Burke and Rev. Ken Marlovits, Jack’s nephew, will co-celebrate the funeral Mass. Burial services will be private.
