William "Ed" Cummins, Jr Obituary

William "Ed" Cummins Jr., 77, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8th, 2025 in Sewickley, PA. Born July 18th, 1947, Ed grew up in a proud Naval family, instilling in him a lifelong commitment to excellence and service. Following in his father's footsteps, himself a Navy Captain, Ed attended the United States Naval Academy graduating with The Harry E Ward Trident Scholar Award in 1969.

Ed honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1975, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering Applied Science from the University of California, Davis Livermore. He retired from the Navy Reserve at the rank of Captain in 1994.

Following his naval career, Ed joined Westinghouse Electric Company, earning multiple awards and recognition as a distinguished nuclear engineer. He served as the design leader of the AP1000 nuclear reactor project, receiving a lifetime achievement award from Westinghouse in 2013, and retired in 2018 as Vice President & Chief Technology Officer after a 43 year career.

Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gail Cummins and later by his beloved wife Beverly Poling Cummins. He is survived by his sons, Dan and Ian Cummins, from his marriage to Gail, and stepchildren Marina Belmonte and Mike Kalis from his marriage to Beverly.  Ed found great joy and happiness from time spent nurturing and educating his four children.  He also enthusiastically embraced his ever growing cast of grandchildren who will dearly miss time spent playing with grandpa “Ace”.

He also loved traveling the world with his family, and enjoyed reading, skiing, swimming, and visiting with loved ones and friends throughout his life.

Ed will be remembered fondly for his sharp intellect, unyielding work ethic, compassionate heart, and deep love for his family.

A memorial service celebrating Ed's life will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 15th, 2025, at Sewickley Presbyterian Church, located at 414 Grant St, Sewickley, PA 15143.
