A well-respected man, husband, father, grandfather, friend, Christian, Veteran, and Sports fanatic, William Power Spellman, passed peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2020.
He was 92. Bill was born in Newport, RI on June 2, 1927, the last survivor of four children born to the late Robert Vincent and Esther (Power) Spellman. Bill married his beloved, Alice M. (Van Goethem) on June 17, 1950. They had 65 wonderful years until she passed in 2015. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Spellman, Jr., sister Mary Whitlesy and brother Arthur Spellman. Bill is survived by sons Bruce (wife Julie) Spellman of Manhattan, KS, Brian (wife Mary Sue) Spellman of Wexford, and Gary Spellman of Charlotte, NC; 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with another expected this June. Bill retired in 1989 after 40 years with US Air where he had been a station manager for 15 years and established customer service in the airports of Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City, Newark and Pittsburgh. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church and the Retired US Air Employees. Part of the Greatest Generation, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was also the #1 Booster for Moon Area Sports earning a lifetime pass to all Moon sports (many, now adults, to this day remember him cheering them on). Bill loved to walk in the neighborhoods of Amherst, Sharon Hill North and South. He made friends along the way. He always had a smile and kind word for all. You were blessed if you knew Bill. He was an all-round nice guy, loved by many, and never forgotten. Due to the architectural design of Copeland’s Moon Township and because of the COVID-19, Bill will have a signature virtual visitation with a drive around greeting with the family on Thursday, April 23, 2020 from 2-5 PM, please remain in your cars, following CDC recommendation and social distancing. Please sign our on-line guest book at www.copelandfuneralhomes.com. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery. A Memorial Mass to celebrate Bill’s life will be held later at St. Margaret Mary Church. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations in Bills name to the Food Bank of your choice. Bill’s family would like to thank the care-givers at Arden Courts and his friends at the Appian for their love and support.
