September 17th, 1938 to October 9th , 2025
Urmila Bipin Amin, age 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on the morning of Thursday, October 9th in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. She was a generous and loving mother and grandmother and an unparalleled chef —known for her delicious yet healthy vegetarian Gujarati food.
Urmila was born on September 17th, 1938 in Mombasa, Kenya, to Suraj and Mangaldas Patel. The family moved back to Mumbai, India, where she grew up in the Matunga neighborhood with her seven siblings. She was an outstanding student and at a time when it was difficult for women to become doctors, she earned admission to GS Medical College and graduated with honors.
On May 6th, 1962, she married Bipin Gulabdas Amin at a joyful ceremony in Ode, Gujarat. Later that year they immigrated to Johnson City, New York, to begin their residency programs.
Urmila had a long career as an anesthesiologist in the Washington, D.C. area. After retirement she enjoyed traveling, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and participating in the Dada Bhagwan community. She believed in wellness, meditation, and a healthy lifestyle. Even after developing Parkinson’s disease at age 82, which affected her mobility in her last years, she continued to face each day with grace and strength.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Bipin, sons Kumar and Amar, daughters-in-law Lisa Rivera and Nrupur Patel, and granddaughters Lakshmi, Lekha, Ashni, and Jesal.
In lieu of gifts, we invite you to make a donation in her name to Shri Mangal Mandir in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she shared many wonderful memories with friends and family.
