Susan Reuter Obituary

Susan Guyton Reuter, 87, passed away at home on December 19, 2025, surrounded by her children, following a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Known to nearly everyone as Susie, she was a fun-loving, caring, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 4, 1938, to Jack and Elizabeth (Quinn) Guyton at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where her father worked as a well-known eye surgeon. An only child, Susie grew up deeply influenced by her grandmother Kate Smallwood and stepsister Page Williams, as well as her aunt, uncles, and many cousins who surrounded her with love. While her early childhood was spent in Oxford, Mississippi, before moving to Grosse Pointe, Michigan, she enjoyed spending each summer on Kent Island on the Chesapeake Bay with close family friends, the Mylanders.

She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and she met her first husband, Jim Rock. They married at the end of 1959 and moved to Palo Alto, California the following year, to attend Stanford University, where Susie studied Speech and Hearing. They had three children.

Susie and Jim moved to Sewickley, Pennsylvania, in the early 1960s, and though she lived in various cities and states as a child, Susie called Sewickley home for more than 60 years. It was here that she met her beloved late husband, Walter H. Reuter III. She and Walt married on July 18, 1976, in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at Chautauqua Institution, and enjoyed 45 happy, fun-filled years together.

In Sewickley, she raised her three children, forged long-lasting friendships, and built a successful career, ultimately in real estate. Early in her career, Susie worked in the field of speech and hearing at the Watson Institute in Sewickley, where she later served as a program head. She then joined Bell Telephone in Pittsburgh as part of the company’s management program. It was in real estate, however, that Susie truly found her calling. She began her career at Potter White Realty, Inc. in Sewickley, quickly earned her broker’s license, and became an office manager at both Merril Lynch Realty and Prudential Preferred Realty. Yet her heart was always with her clients, and she soon returned to full-time sales, eventually retiring from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices The Preferred Realty.

Over more than 40 years, many of them in partnership with her dear friend and colleague Beverly McQuone, Susie became one of the most well-known, respected, and beloved real estate agents in the Sewickley area – often joking that she had “bought and sold every house in Sewickley at least three times.” A natural mentor, she guided countless new agents and helped hundreds of families begin new chapters of their lives.

Susie brightened every room she entered and had a rare gift for making everyone feel like an old and cherished friend. She embraced life with enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure – spending summers on the golf course and winters on the paddle tennis court and ski slopes. She cherished summers sailing on Chautauqua Lake with Walt and traveling the world with close friends. An avid reader, she treasured her book club and, in her later years, looked forward to weekly bridge games, delighting as much in the camaraderie as in the challenge. She also loved a good glass of chardonnay on ice, often enjoyed in the company of family and friends.

Time with family was especially dear to Susie. She took great joy in her children and grandchildren, savoring everyday moments as well as special occasions, and she was overjoyed to welcome two great-grandchildren into her life.

Throughout her life, she was an active member and supporter of many local clubs and organizations, including the musical performances of the Child Health Association, where she both danced and served as choreographer. Above all, Susie simply loved being with people.

Susie is survived by her children, Tracey Rock, Paige (Dave) Fishel, and Jim (Jessica) Rock; her grandchildren, Elizabeth “Libby” Rock, Jonah (Sarah) Fishel, Elijah (Mikayla) Fishel, Tristan Fishel, and Rachel and Noah Rock; her great-grandchildren, Wren and Kellan Fishel; and her stepsister, Page Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, and her parents.

Devoted to everyone she loved, Susie’s warmth, laughter, and gift for making everyone feel welcome made her unforgettable to all who had the joy of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 27, at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Sewickley, located at 414 Grant Street, Sewickley, PA 15143, immediately followed by a reception at Allegheny Country Club.
