Michelle Peduto Obituary

Michelle A. Peduto, 66, of Sewickley, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Michelle was born on April 12, 1958, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Markie) Phelan. Beloved wife of the late David B. Peduto who preceded her in death in 2016. Cherished mother of Elizabeth (Craig) Kantoris of Latrobe, Emily Peduto of Pittsburgh, Samuel (Tatum) Peduto and Joseph Peduto all of Sewickley. Sister of Michael (Peg) Phelan of Lewiston, Maine. Sister-in-law of William Peduto of Pittsburgh and Donna (Guy) Peduto of Fairmont, WV. “Nana” to Abigail, Lizzy, Miranda, Wyatt and the late Michelle Kantoris. Loving aunt of Samuel, Zachary and Maggie Phelan.

Michelle grew up in Mattawamkeag, Maine and attended high school at Mattanawcook Academy. She went on to graduate from Trenton State College to pursue her passion for elementary education. This passion also led her to obtain Master’s Degrees from the University of Texas at San Antonio and Duquesne University. Her career as an educator began in the early 80’s and spanned decades. Michelle’s deep belief that all children deserve access to a quality Catholic education led her to become the Director of Educational Programs and Partnerships for the Extra Mile Education Foundation. A born leader and effective collaborator, Michelle began to pursue opportunities in educational leadership as a school principal and eventually went on to serve as the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s Superintendent of Catholic Schools. Michelle served in this role for five years before retiring in 2024.

As she embarked on the journey of what would become a fulfilling career, Michelle found the love of her life, David. They were married soon after in 1985. David’s distinguished military career and adventurous spirit moved them to many homes across the country. Michelle found her greatest joy when she became a mother. Her true life’s work was raising her children and guiding them through adulthood. She also adored her children’s spouses and considered them her children rather than in-laws. Her life was completely dedicated to her family. In a recently unearthed journal, she is quoted as saying, “There is nothing in this world so glorious as family. I hope this is the message my Betsy, Emily, Sam, and Joey have heard each year and at each holiday table. There is no gift from God on earth greater than the love of a family.” Michelle enjoyed cooking and decorating for the holidays to entertain her large family. She also loved to sing and dance with her darling grandson, Wyatt. Her favorite place to be was her porch where she enjoyed reading a new book, sitting to chat with dear friends, or having a peaceful moment with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. While her most precious memories were made in her home, she also enjoyed travel and looked forward to her yearly family vacations at the Jersey Shore. Last year, she showcased her bravery by taking a solo road trip to Wyoming. She called it one of the most profound experiences of her life.

Michelle lived her life in service to others. She had an innate gift for making people feel welcome and accepted while filling rooms with her humor and joy. She truly loved everyone she met and had no acquaintances, only friends. We will always remember her most for her unwavering faith in God and deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Prayer of Saint Francis Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. “This is how I will choose to live out all my days. Will you join me? We can choose to be the peacemakers.”
