With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Michael “Mike” E. Brake, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, who passed away at the age of 70. Born on December 21, 1955, Mike lived a life defined by love, devotion to family, lasting friendships, and a genuine appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
Mike built a distinguished career in print media, serving as an Account Executive for Gateway Publishing, Pittsburgh Magazine, and ultimately the Pittsburgh Business Times, where he retired in March 2026. Throughout his professional life, he was respected not only for his dedication and work ethic, but also for the relationships he built along the way.
Mike was the longtime love of 19 years to Janet Proulx; a loving father to Justin Brake, Heather Brake (Eddie Proctor), and Shawn Brake; and a proud grandfather, lovingly known as “Pap,” to Ariana Reed, Kayden Reed, Brecklyn Brake, Brinley Brake, and Brycen Brake. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Citriniti (Dom); his former wife, Dorothy Brake; as well as his beloved niece, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Barbara Brake, and his brother, David Brake.
An Eagle Scout in his youth, Mike carried a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. He found joy on the golf course, casting a line into the water and enjoying the thrill of a catch, and watching birds in their natural habitat. Yet nothing brought him more fulfillment than spending time with his love, Janet, his children, and his grandchildren. Whether it was going on camping trips, sitting around a backyard fire sharing stories and laughter, or simply enjoying one another’s company, Mike treasured every moment spent with his family.
Those who knew Mike will remember a man whose presence made life a little brighter. He had a warm heart, an easy smile, and a way of making everyone feel welcome. Mike was the kind of person who could strike up a conversation with anyone and leave them feeling like a friend. His kindness, sense of humor, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Simply put, if you knew Mike, you loved him.
Though our world feels dimmer without him, Mike’s light lives on in every life he touched. He was a gift, a blessing, and he will never be forgotten.
Family and friends will be received at R.D. Copeland, Inc. Funeral Home, 981 Brodhead Road, Moon Township, PA 15108, on Wednesday, June 3rd 2026 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
