Michael Pitterich Obituary

Michael P. Pitterich, an irrepressible force of nature whose life defied convention and whose passion reshaped industries and the Pittsburgh region, passed away on May 9th at the age of 70. A man whose ambition, generosity, creative vision, and unapologetic individuality, left an indelible mark on Pittsburgh and those fortunate enough to known him.

With unwavering curiosity and drive, he was a larger-than-life figure. Michael graduated from his beloved Georgetown University with a degree in political science before earning his J.D. from the Duquesne University School of Law. He began his career as a lawyer, founding the Pitterich and Associates law firm, but soon pivoted to business where he built a steel empire from sheer grit and instinct. Owning and operating multiple steel mills, he revitalized parts of the industry many had left for dead – turning rust into gold with a blend of savvy deal-making and fearless risk-taking.

But it wasn’t all business. Michael was a relentless advocate for the soul of Pittsburgh. A lifelong lover of live music, he devoted himself to resurrecting the city’s once-vibrant live music scene. He poured time, money and heart into opening nightclubs, sponsoring events and mentoring young artists. The most well-known was Altar Bar in the Strip District, a former church that was he converted into a concert venue featuring well-known national acts as well as young unknown artists that he mentored.

In 2008, after the death of his brother from bone cancer, he founded The Pitterich Foundation, which currently supports Cancer Research, the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute’s research and development on liver transplants and the UPMC Cancer Research Center.  In 2021, his donation to The Rowland School of Business at Point Park University kick started the establishment of the Michael P. Pitterich Sales and Innovation Center. His wish was to further expand the University’s ability to support the city he loved, while also fulfilling the wishes of his father who wanted to ensure there would be an enduring legacy to the Pitterich name.  He also funded several endowed scholarships at Georgetown University.

But most importantly, Mike was extremely generous and accommodating to so many.  He provided support and assistance to so many who needed help.  His generosity was boundless and always gracious.  It was legendary.  All who knew him were beneficiaries in some memorable fashion. He was an active member of Laurel Valley Golf Club, Shannonpin Country Club and Sewickley Heights Country Club.  He loved the Grateful Dead, the Rollings Stones and Morton’s Steakhouse.  Always up for a good time, Michael leaves the party early but with many a story that will be told for generations.

Mchael was predeceased by his loving parents, Wernert (Ace) and Alberta (Mickey); his brother, Joseph, and his sister, Sue Ann Molloy. He is survived by his nieces Sarah Roxe, Beth Wells, and Meg Colella and his nephew Bart Molloy  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Sewickley, immediately followed by a celebration of life at Sewickley Heights Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, the Pitterich family asks that donations may be made to the Pitterich Foundation or Pittsburgh music and arts initiatives because as Michael would say, “The city’s heartbeat is only as strong as the music it plays.”
