Mary Kathryn (McGurk) Scalercio

Mary Kathryn McGurk Scalercio, a dedicated educator and committed public servant, passed away on November 28, 2025, with family and friends by her side. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1951, and spent her formative years in Springfield and Longmeadow, MA.

Mary was a lifelong learner and professional. She was a proud graduate of Cathedral High School and went on to obtain her undergraduate degree in Speech Correction from Carlow University. Her dedication to education continued as she earned her Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in Special Education from Duquesne University.

Mary had a long and successful career as a Speech-Language Pathologist for the Quaker Valley School District, where she positively impacted the lives of countless students. Her commitment to her profession was reflected in her past memberships in the American Speech and Hearing Association, the Pennsylvania Speech and Hearing Association, and the National Education Association.

Beyond her career, Mary had a long history of service to her community. She was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels for over a decade and served with distinction on the Glen Osborne Borough Council for 12 years. She was also an Associate Member of the Child Health Association of Sewickley.

While Mary devoted much of her life to service and her career, she always found time for her family and the things she loved. She cherished time with her family and enjoyed her hobbies, including playing bridge as a beginner, and traveling, especially to the ocean. Watching the sunrises and sunsets by the sea brought her great peace. Among her favorite trips, though, was visiting the casino.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, George G. McGurk and Marion B. McGurk, and her brother, Kevin H. McGurk (Susan).

She is survived by her beloved husband, Leo R. Scalercio, Jr., and her devoted daughter, Hope K. Scalercio. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews who will miss her.

Friends and family are invited to meet at the R.D. Copeland Funeral Home, Irvine Chapel on Tuesday, December 2, at 9 am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Church – Divine Redeemer Parish 444 Glenfield Road, Sewickley, PA 15143.

A Celebration of Mary's Life will be held Thursday, December 11, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at The Edgeworth Club, 511 East Drive, Sewickley, PA 15143 for those wishing to share memories and pay tribute
