Mary D. (Roberts) Hoehl, wife of the late Stanley Lockwood Hoehl - both graduates of Brentwood High School, passed on Thursday, September 21, 2021.
A woman of considerable style and grace throughout her 98 years, Mary “MD” held a deep and enduring love for family, literature, and music. Born into a paternal Welsh family of beautiful singing voices known throughout the city, she too found expression by participating in choral activities at school, including Brentwood High School’s “Triple Trio”. While raising her 4 children, Mary joined Presbyterian Church Choirs where she was often asked to perform as a soloist. Later, while taking classes to complete her college degrees, she became an active member of the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh. Eventually she graduated from Pitt with her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Library Science Degrees and initiated a mid-life career at Robert Morris College Library in Moon Township as Head of their Catalog Department. Around that time she found an outside interest in fine bookbinding, creating many exquisitely bound books that she gave to family and friends. Mary retired in 1993, enabling her to fully immerse herself in choral music as a member of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh under the direction of Robert Page. She was a Festival Singer in Page’s summer European tours - to her complete enjoyment - where she sang among the choirs of the world. Mary held frequent gatherings with family and friends on the lovely acre of land in Franklin Park she and her late husband purchased together. For many years her gracious demeanor and generosity made gatherings there, especially Christmas Eve dinner, magical and wonderful events.
She leaves behind her 4 children – Greg (Linda) Hoehl, Lockwood Hoehl, Bob (Sue) Hoehl, Mary (John) Plakidas, 7 Grandchildren – Matt (Jen) Hoehl, Ashley (Kevin) Miko, Micah (Gracy) Haskell-Hoehl, Ariel (Brian) Walker, Aidan Hoehl, Beth (Ali) Plakidas, Ben Plakidas, and 8 Great Grandchildren. Funeral service and interment were made private due to the Covid Delta variant.
