Mary Elkins Obituary

Mary M. (Egley) Elkins, 92, was taken peacefully into Heaven on the afternoon Tuesday, June 2, 2020 from West Hills Health Care Center. She was born in Groveton on July 1, 1927 to the late Alex and Mary (Fisher) Egley. Mary, proud to be a local girl, lived all her life in Coraopolis, graduated from Coraopolis High School, class of 1945. She married the love of her life, Ralph W. Elkins who preceded her in death in 1985. Beloved mother of Randy (Cherie) Elkins of Texas, David (the late Betty) Elkins of Coraopolis and the late Anita Elkins; cherished grandmother of Jaime Elkins, Jesse Jacob Almendarez and Phillips Clayton Almendarez and a slew of great grandchildren; step sister of Eileen and sister of the late Alex. Mary was all about her church, family, and hard work. Mary was an active and faithful member of Coraopolis United Methodist Church singing in the choir, United Methodist Women and Church Women United. Our little town of Coraopolis was sort of like “Mayberry” where the community attended the Salad Smorgasbord, the Annual Pancake Breakfast, The Country Store, and the church picnic/sing along.  Mary, called by many as Grandma and “GG”, had an innate sense of kindness, warmth, and love. Mary worked at two local drugstores: Fanning’s and Oellig, the local coffee shop, The Coffee Mill that sold Mac’s Donuts, and was the site manager for Meals on Wheels at her church. She was involved with Eastern Star, serving as Past Worthy Matron for Coraopolis, and helped with Rainbow Girls and DeMolay. Both she and Ralph were members of the VFW Post 402 and she also participated in their Ladies Auxiliary. Ralph and Mary also loved to camp at their trailer in Yogi Bear Campground in Slippery Rock. A celebration of Mary’s Life will take place at Coraopolis United Methodist Church when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Because Mary loved her church, the family suggests if desired, donations in her name to Coraopolis United Methodist Church. During this great time of unrest with the Corona Virus and the widespread demonstrations (peaceful and violent), we are grateful for Mary’s life and the beautiful little town she called home.
