Joseph Mulvaney Obituary

Joseph Gerard Mulvaney, 76, passed on Sunday June 7, 2026 at his home in Moon Township surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy (Phillips) Mulvaney and children Katie (Nicholas) Sterghos and Connor (Christine) Mulvaney, and grandchildren Maeve Mulvaney and Owen Sterghos. Also survived by sisters Virginia Gates, Anna Capriotti, Mary Clayton and brother Jim Mulvaney. Preceded in death by his siblings Thomas Mulvaney, Sheila Mulvaney, Betsy Della Vecchia and Peg Abramowicz, and nephew Jason Abramowicz.

Joe retired from a long career at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, but continued his lifetime of service to his community beyond his working years. He was an usher, lector and eucharistic minister as a member of St. Margaret Mary, Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and served on the council of the Pittsburgh St. Vincent de Paul Society. He served those in need through volunteering at the Holy Family Institute and St. Mary of Mercy Red Door Mission. He also was proud to volunteer for Special Olympics Pennsylvania while cheering on his beloved nephew, Jason.

Joe also benefited his broader community by serving on the Moon Township Zoning Hearing Board for 25 years as well as holding office at the local Wyngate Swim Club as president, where he loved to spend hot summer days. Ever proud to celebrate his Irish heritage as friends may (or may struggle to) recall, he was a member of the All Ireland Athletic Club and unwitting fan of the game of hurling.

When Joe wasn’t working or volunteering, he could be found enjoying time with his family swimming, whitewater rafting, cheering on at 5ks and marathons, just being outside or backyard birdwatching. His love for Pittsburgh sports, especially the Pirates, was possibly second only to his contempt for the Pirates. He enjoyed a big breakfast from Eggs N’at, a cold pop or beer with dinner, and always ice cream after. By far, his greatest joy later in life was spending time with his new grandchildren.

Friends will be received at R. D. Copeland, Inc., 981 Brodhead Road, Moon Township on Sunday from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 pm where a Funeral Prayer will be held on Monday at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Margaret Mary Church at 10 am.
