Janice Lee Allen, 88, of Neville Island, PA, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2020, at Good Samaritan Hospice House in Wexford, after a courageous struggle with dementia.
She is survived by her two daughters, Tracey Allen Dawson of Neville Island, and Denise Allen Kuhn and husband, Dale, of Yucaipa, CA. Janice was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harold “Oats” Allen.
Janice was born in rural West Virginia on September 12, 1932, to Leona Lynch and Charles Henry Staggers. Her siblings who predeceased her were Robert Staggers, Alma Vucich, and Charles Staggers.
Her family moved north to Pittsburgh during WWII so her father could seek employment to support the war effort. Janice graduated from Coraopolis High School in 1950 and then attended two years of business school. She moved to Neville Island with Oats in 1954 and lived there until her death. She retired from the Cornell School District in 1994.
Janice worked hard at home and at work and she played just as hard. She loved the beach, boating on the Ohio River, and traveling in an RV with Oats. You could hear her laugh above the chatter whenever you walked into any crowded room. One younger friend recently commented, “She was just so pretty.” She was also smart, strong, and independent.
Denise and Tracey will receive friends on Thursday, October 8, from 3-7 p.m. at Copeland’s in Coraopolis. Friends are also invited to a picnic on the riverbank on Friday, October 9, at noon. You can connect with Janice’s family and receive more information, including picnic location, at mrsoatsallen@aol.com. Memorial donations may be made to West Hills Meals on Wheels, 1205 Ridge Avenue, Coraopolis, PA 15108.
