James Chavers Obituary

James W. Chavers, 89, of Coraopolis, a faithful man, attending Sunday Church service, who was bestowed with a beautiful baritone voice, had just finished singing his signature song "Blessed Assurance" when he sank gently to the pew. God's Angels carried him to his Heavenly Home from Heritage Valley Sewickley where he passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

Born in Greensboro, Alabama on May 30, 1936, James was one of seven children to the late Lettie (Cook) and Andrew Chavers, Jr. Preceded in death by sister, Gertrude George of Los Angeles, brother, Arthur Chavers (Lulu) of St. Louis, and brother Al of Detroit. James is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years (married June 1, 1959) Barbara A. (Revis) Chavers; loving father of Deborah R. Chavers-Stout of Riverside, OH, Dr. James W. Chavers (Jeff Levison) of Pasadena, CA, Christopher P. Chavers (Gladys) of St. Augustine, FL, Ralph Tune (Atiya) of Buford, GA and Cara Tune of Philadelphia; proud grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 5; brother of Nettie Melton of Tuscaloosa, AL, Leona B. Collins (Charles) of Tuscaloosa, AL, Andrew Chavers (Helen) of Memphis, TN, Samuel Tabb of Houston, TX, Linda Faye Banks (William) of Atlanta, GA and Bobbi Jean Lomax of Tuscaloosa, AL; also nieces, nephews, cousins, a host of relatives and many friends.

For 40+ years, James worked for Sewickley Valley Hospital as a painter, retiring in 2001. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1957. He was a dedicated member of Whosoever Wills Church where he had served as Minister of Music, he planted and maintained the Church gardens, landscaping, pruning, building maintenance and upkeep. He was involved with cub scouts, had been a Constable and Ranger and ran for office as a local representative. Always striving to strengthen his Christian Faith, he attended Hardy Bible School's 4-year program for which he graduated. His special connection with people helped him live his faith through prison ministry, helping homeless people, and mentoring youth at risk. James' resilience enabled him to fight cancer for 25 years while continuing to minister to the incarcerated and the homeless. Selfless, he followed God's journey for his life. James will be remembered for his love of family, love of God, love of others and his beautiful voice that transcends all language barriers, symbolizing peace, beauty and acceptance, and most importantly the message of Jesus' Love. Now you are a member of the great Cloud of Witnesses. Please watch over us.
