Hawley "Bud" Merrihew Obituary

Hawley William Merrihew (Bud) of Penn Hills, formerly of Moon Township passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Oakland VA Medical Center surrounded by loving family.He was 97. Bud was born on January 25, 1927 in Bethlehem. PA to the late Mildred (Maloid) and Arthur W. Merrihew. He graduated from Allentown High School in 1944 and attended Muhlenberg College. Bud was proud to serve in the US Army during WW ll. He was accepted into VMI, serving as a Warrant Officer and working with radar. Bud married the love of his life, Ethel Woolley) on March 13, 1947. They shared 66 wonderful years together. She preceded him in death on May 13, 2013. Bud began his professional career at Philco and retired from Consol Energy. He also wrote many articles for various publications. Bud and Ethel loved to travel and also loved to dance. They taught Square, Round, Line, and Ballroom dancing through programs at CCAC. In 1991 Bud and Ethel formed the “Let’s Dancers” dance team with five other couples who shared their passion for dance. They provided entertainment at Senior Centers, Churches, Nursing Homes, and Community Centers. Bud also loved antique British cars and successfully restored three: a 1963 MG Midget, 1966 Austin Healey Bug Eye Sprite, and a 1966 Mini Cooper. He also served as a Judge at many car shows, including Hershey, PA. Bud was a member of First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh (Oakland) and the Penn Hills VFW. Bud is survived by his three beloved children: Diane (Robert) Miller, Cynthia (James) Baughman, and Robert (Karen) Merrihew.Also surviving are five grandchildren: Amy (Judd) Vetock, Laura (Piita) Garvey, Christopher ((fiancée Angela Watson) Baughman, Sarah (Kirk) Pope, and Scott (Andrea) Merrihew; and four great grandchildren: Jackson Vetock, Gavin Vetock, Lucas Merrihew, and Lauren Merrihew. He is also survived by his cousin and life-long friend William Raudenbush. A committal service with full military honors will be held at Grandview Cemetery, Allentown, PA.
