Harold "Hal" Bonnett Obituary

Harold “Hal” David Bonnett died at the age of 86, on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at his home in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Born in Elyria, Ohio, the younger of two sons to Walter C. and Amelia Bechtel Bonnett, Hal was raised on his family’s homesteaded farm with his brother, Bill. The farm remains in the family to this day. Hal was a proud graduate of the Ohio State University majoring in Agricultural Science and had a long and successful sales career in agriculture and horticulture. As much as he traveled during his business career, Hal loved to travel to places both in the United States and around the world, visiting all 50 states and more than 40 countries with family and friends. An inveterate handyman, he restored a 1963 MGA and entered and showed it in several antique automobile events. He was a passionate sailor and was blessed to have enjoyed his boat throughout the Virgin Islands, but also sailed widely around the world. He often visited Lake Tahoe, California, where he and his wife met 41 years ago. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Hal was best known for his work ethic, practical worldview of others, but most notably his kindness, compassion, and generosity. Until the end, he loved to be actively involved in tending to his gardens, and even chopped his own fire wood into his 80‘s. Hal maintained an abiding Christian faith and was an active and devout member of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Wright Bonnett; his sons, Harold David Bonnett, Jr. (wife Anne), and Eric James Bonnett; his stepsons, Andrew W. Hastings (wife Sherry), William W. Hastings (wife Michele); and Bradford J. Hastings; his granddaughters, Fiona Bonnett and Katharine Hastings; and his grandsons, William and Harper Hastings; his sister-in-law, Jean S. Bonnett of Elyria, Ohio, and her four children, David, Michael, Matthew and Mark. Due to COVID-19, a memorial celebration is anticipated to be scheduled in the Spring of 2021. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Hal’s memory to Sewickley Presbyterian Church Community Outreach Programs, Brother’s Brothers Foundation and World Vision.
