On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Guy Swanson, age 90, passed peacefully at Apple Blossom Senior Living, Moon Township.
Born May 3, 1934, to Norman and Luella (Peterson) Swanson, Guy grew up in Wilcox, Pennsylvania. On May 5, 1956, he married Ruth Peterson from nearby Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. He then spent time in the US Army as a military policeman in Mainz, Germany. After his stint in the service, Guy was hired by Eastern Airlines. His thirty-five-year career with the airline began in Cleveland, where he and Ruth welcomed Sherri in 1961 and Kevin in 1963.
In 1970, Guy transferred to a position as a customer service supervisor for Eastern at Friendship Airport (Baltimore). The family settled in Severna Park, MD. Guy enjoyed the “Maryland vibe”, enjoying boating and crabbing in his little runabout on the Severn River and spending time in nearby Annapolis. He was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan and enjoyed taking his family to the games. Guy enjoyed tennis, jogging and traveling. His airline privileges allowed him to take his family on numerous vacations in the US, Canada and Caribbean as well as play tennis in locations around the world, including Australia.
Guy and Ruth divorced in 1983 but remained best friends until Ruth’s passing in 2019. They went out to eat a couple times a week and enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, Maryland Live Casino, and to visit their grandsons in Pittsburgh.
When Eastern Airlines ceased to operate in 1990, Guy began a second career with AA Foreign Car Parts in Glen Burnie, Maryland. He enjoyed mingling with the local mechanics and especially enjoyed not having to wear a shirt and tie to work every day! He continued to work for AA Foreign Car Parts well into his 80’s.
In 2022, Guy moved from his home in Arnold, MD to Apple Blossom Senior Living in Moon Township, PA so he could be
close to his daughter and grandsons. He spent his last days enjoying sports. He never missed an Orioles game on TV and enjoyed rooting for both the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also blessed to spend a lot of time with his family.
Guy is survived by his daughter Sherri (Francis) Perfett of Moon Township, PA, his son Kevin Swanson (Rick) of Catonsville, MD, sister Betty Swanson Roberts of Zelienople, PA, two grandsons Jack and Jamie Perfett, three nephews, four cousins and his special friend at Apple Blossom, Marlene Daniels.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 6 – 8 pm at R. D. Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 981 Brodhead Road, Moon Township followed by a memorial service at the funeral home on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 9 am. Interment will be private at The Cemetery of the Alleghenies, where Guy will be buried with full military honors.
