Glenn Baird Obituary

Glenn R. Baird (85) of Crescent Township passed away peacefully on Nov.3, 2021, surrounded by loved ones.
Born August 9,1936, he was the seventh child of the late Fred S. Baird and June Rose McCurdy.
Glenn attended Coraopolis High School while training and working as a butcher in Masselli’s Market.
On September 24, 1955, Glenn married the love of his life, the late Ona L. Baird. That day began a beautiful marriage that lasted 56 years, and brought up three children: Sharon B. Auth, the late Samuel F. Baird and Sandra L. Baird.
Glenn, after a 33 year career at Jones & Laughlin Steel, retired from the mill as a Certified Journeyman Welder. Always looking for opportunities to better himself, Glenn was hired at J&L as a barge hand working on the river, but he soon took the company’s opportunity to become a licensed tug boat pilot because that job was done indoors, out of the brutal weather. Bidding into a job on land, he became an electrician’s helper before acceptance in the 4 year apprentice program for welding. Glenn excelled in the course and was frequently asked to do custom metal work for supervisors that recognized his great skill in the craft. Glenn called these special projects “government jobs”. After achieving every certification offered in the welding trade, he earned the internationally recognized distinction of Journeyman, meaning he had proven his skill to the highest level in all aspects of metallurgy, welding with every type of gas and machine, welding mixed metals, project design, and the strength of the metal pieces he welded together. Glenn was the only welder in his class to achieve Journeyman status.
He was also very talented in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and automotive repairs; all of which were mainly self-taught.
With his wife and children, Glenn enjoyed many summer vacations driving across the country pulling a pop-up camper. As empty-nesters, Glenn and Ona wintered in Florida and traveled abroad by cruise ship or package tour, often with a group of their friends, seeing gorgeous places and making many wonderful memories.
Glenn was an avid deer hunter, poker or dominoes player, and ballroom dancer. He enjoyed people and the connectedness of a big extended family. He was always willing to share his knowledge & various skills with others who needed his help or wanted to learn how to do some of the things Glenn had mastered. He was a good teacher & mentor for the inexperienced among us, alway keeping his sense of humor & giving encouragement to willing learners. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
Glenn was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge in Coraopolis for 50 years.
As a widower, Glenn enjoyed the quiet country life in Clarion County with his devoted companion, Linda Slike.
Glenn is survived by his daughters, Sharon B. Auth and Sandra L. Baird, grandson Jordan Auth (Deena Hower) and granddaughter Stefanie Dorrance (Ryan). The delight of his old age are great-grandsons William Dorrance (who was born on Glenn’s 79th birthday) and Samuel Dorrance. Glenn’s younger brother, Lloyd D. Baird (Carol) is also surviving, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Glenn is preceded in death by his wife, Ona, and son, Sam, as well as his siblings: Garnet Smola, Dorothy Fleckinstein, Lois Neely, Fred E. Baird, Donald Baird, and Wayne Baird.
In his last days, Glenn was unafraid to face death because of his deep Christian faith. He knew where he was going and he was ready to meet his Maker. He also had confidence in the promise of joyous reunions in heaven, saying,”I know a lot of good people up there!”.
