Gary Gibson Obituary

Gary Allen Gibson

Gary (“Gibby”) Gibson, age 66, died unexpectedly at home in Coraopolis, PA, on June 14, 2020 from complications of heart disease. He was born in Sewickley, PA, to Robert Gordon Gibson and Betty Marie McChesney Gibson, both of whom predecease him.  A graduate of Cornell High School class of 1972, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served as a stateside military air traffic controller from 1972 to 1975.  He had planned on becoming an air traffic controller when he got out of the Army, but head injuries from a serious car accident in 1976 thwarted those plans.  He later attended college in Utah and Pennsylvania where he studied geology.  He held a variety of jobs in the Southwest, Baltimore and Coraopolis, including as a long-haul truck driver.  Gary especially enjoyed the many years he worked at St. Vincent de Paul while being the main caregiver for both of his parents during their declining years.

A person of diverse interests, for a time, he was a regular at Friday night karaoke and on Sundays was a faithful Steeler fan. Gary was a huge history buff and watched the History channel all the time. With his wealth of knowledge on many subjects, you always wanted Gary on your Trivial Pursuit team. He only recently discovered YouTube and was looking forward to exploring its many varied subjects.  For many years, every morning he rode his bike 24 miles roundtrip on the Montour Trail. His longtime dream was to start his own T-shirt company.   A kind and caring person, he would help anyone who would ask. His sense of humor always brought a smile to everyone who met him and will be dearly missed by family and friends. His survivors include siblings Robert Gibson (Pam) of Coraopolis, Susan Gibson of  Columbia, MD, Carole Kushner (Steve) of Shippensburg, PA,  Jan Klucevsek (Guy) of Staten Island, NY,  and nephews James Blosser, Jr., Brian, Brad and Brett Gibson, Shane Kushner and niece, Shawna Kushner.  Arrangements through Copeland Funeral Home.  A memorial service will be set for a later date.  Donations may be made in his honor to your favorite veteran’s charity.
