Obituary

Stoner, Gail S., age 87, died peacefully at her home in Sewickley, PA on Saturday, April 1st, 2023. Elizabeth Gail Suender was born on April 27th, 1935, in Pottsville, PA. She had a wonderful childhood in Pottsville, raised by her loving parents, Russell L. Suender and Elizabeth Beisel Suender. Gail joins her parents (our Gogie and Nonie), big sister Susanne Harvey, and big brothers Skip Suender and John Suender in heaven.Gail was very blessed to have married two great gentlemen. John Thorp Stoner of Sewickley was married to Gail from 1977-2011. “Jay” died on February 15th, 2011, and that loss was very tough on Mom. Jay was also a kind stepfather to Gail’s four children, and a wonderful Grandpa to Gail’s grandchildren. Gail’s oldest child, Sarah Morrison, sadly died unexpectedly in July of 2021 in Newport, RI. Sarah’s 69th heavenly birthday was this past April 3rd, so we were all comforted knowing they were together for that celebration. Sarah’s two children, Maya Manion and her three children (Van, Keely, Gavin) in Middletown, RI; and Shane Dever (wife Sarah, and child Cassandra) in Westchester County, NY loved their Grandma “Ginx”. Gail’s three surviving children: daughter Stephanie Veenis, and sons Jamie Morrison and John Morrison will miss their mom so very much. Stephanie’s family includes her husband Mark Veenis, son Tucker Veenis, his wife Michelle and their daughters Carter and Lily; and daughter Courtenay Veenis of Fox Chapel, PA. Jamie’s family (Dunwoody, GA) includes his wife Mary, daughter Ellie Elvin (Scottsdale, AZ), her husband Tyler, and daughter Emerson; daughter Emily Davis (Salt Lake City, UT) and her husband Riley; and son Jamie Morrison, of Brookhaven, GA. John’s family (Bowling Green, KY) includes his wife Kelly, and daughters Tara Morrison of Louisville, KY, Ashten Everson (Louisville, KY), and her husband Tom; Katherine (Chamblee, GA) and her fiancé Stone Bettersworth; and son John Morrison (Bowling Green). Gail had 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, and she loved them so much. Gail and Jay had wonderful memories at the Stoner family’s beautiful “Sasega” island in Canada’s Georgian Bay. Jay’s sons, Dick and Joel, and their families and Gail’s children and families enjoyed so many late summer sunsets together. The games of charades, cards, singing and laughing on Sasega were amazing. Gail attended Mary C. Wheeler boarding school in Providence, RI, and was married to James J. Morrison in 1953. “Jim” died on May 13th, 1976. Mom moved to Sewickley later that summer and spent the rest of her life there. She lived in Paris during the fall of 2012 and spent many winters in Palm Beach. Her brother-in-law, Herman S. Harvey, “Uncle Bud”, still resides in Sewickley. We are so grateful for their lifelong friendship. Mom had many special friends in Sewickley/Bethesda/Pottsville/Palm Beach/Philadelphia area/New York City/Pinehurst and more. There are so many nieces and nephews that loved their “Aunt Gail” and she loved all of you too. We are so grateful to each and every caregiver that was with Mom during the closing chapter of her life. The card games alone will never be forgotten. Our family is so thankful for your kindness and support during some difficult times. Mom is back to playing tennis, laughing, and keeping an eye on her big family and friends that will see her again! Her love of sports, the theatre, classical music, art, and travel have been passed along to her family. We will miss you terribly. We love you. Gail’s “Celebration of Life” service will be at 11am on Saturday, June 24th at Sewickley Presbyterian Church in Sewickley, PA.
