Elizabeth Shost-Ellis Obituary

Elizabeth Catherine Sandman Shost Ellis

April 23, 1929 – June 26, 2025

Elizabeth C. "Betty" Ellis, 96, passed away on June 26, 2025. Born at home on April 23, 1929, in Wexford, Pennsylvania, to George and Pauline Sandman, Betty's life was marked by dedication to her family and a passion for education.

Betty began her career as a bookkeeper. She married Stanley Peter Shost, and together they raised five children. After Stanley’s passing, she remarried Harvey F. Ellis Jr., and they welcomed another son. Their life together took them from Pennsylvania to Ohio and Wisconsin before they settled in their cherished "forever home" in Texas.

Later in life, Betty transitioned from working as a jewelry display assembler to pursuing her true calling as a Montessori teacher. She embraced her new profession, teaching children with joy until her retirement at the age of 70.

As a devoted mother and grandmother, Betty's joy extended to babysitting her grandchildren and creating cherished memories during beach vacations with her children. She was a constant presence at family milestones, never missing weddings, graduations, showers or birthdays.

Betty's deep faith was evident in her commitment to her church, the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, where she taught Sunday School and dedicated her summers to leading Vacation Bible School (VBS) for children in Navaho Land. She was an active member of The Gad Abouts ladies' group and the Daughters of the King, showcasing her dedication to her spiritual community.

Beyond her church involvement, Betty was a vibrant and social woman. She was a key figure in the Double Oak Women's Club, a regular in one Bunco group and a substitute for another, and frequently enjoyed playing dominoes with friends. As one of Double Oak's original residents, she was honored at the town's 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2024.

In her later years as a widow, Betty embraced travel, often embarking on adventures with her sisters and friends. She also enjoyed attending the theater and continued her regular dominoes games with close friends. Above all, Betty will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, her sisters Mary, Alice, and Shirley, her brothers George, and Robert, her son Stanley Jr. and great grandson Ethan. She is survived by her brother August Sandman, Moon Township, PA and numerous nieces and nephews; Her children, daughter, Diana Rennie (Tim) Greensburg, PA, son Michael Shost (Marcia), daughter Susan Norton (Jim), son Samuel Shost (Nancy), and son Carlton Ellis (Marian); Her 12 grandchildren: Christine Mikrut (Eddie), Tom Rennie (Michelle), Kelly Penz, Michael Shost (Pam), Sonny Shost, Sandy Shost, Steven Shost (Nicole), Matt Shost (Rachel), Jim Norton (Stephanie), John Norton, Joe Norton (Maggie) and Emie Ellis and 18 great grandchildren.
