October 20, 2024 at the Heritage Valley Sewickley Hospital. Dr. Doyle was born in New York City on April 11, 1929, to Irene (Wagner) Doyle and Edward Thompson Doyle.
He attended the Lawrenceville School and graduated from Princeton University in 1950. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical College in 1954. He did internship and residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.
He was a Captain in the Army Medical Corps and was assigned from 1958 to 1960 to an Army environmental unit in Edgewood Maryland and then to the VA Hospital in Aspinwall, Pittsburgh, until 1964.
At the invitation of Dr. James Crittenden, he came to Sewickley Valley Hospital and shared offices with Dr. John (Jack) Shoener. Later he was affiliated with the UPMC oncology center in Moon Township with Dr. Michael Sherry.
Dr. Doyle was a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine, Oncology, and Hematology. He served in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Program under Dr. Bernard Fisher, which established a series of protocols to determine the value of types of treatment given after breast surgery for cancer to decrease the probability of reoccurrence of the tumor. These protocols are still in use today.
In 2014 Dr. Doyle received the Richard E. Deitrick Humanity in Medicine Award from the Allegheny County Medical Society Foundation. Dr. Doyle was renowned for his kind and compassionate care of his patients at any hour of the day. He was known as “the doctors’ doctor” and his expertise was sought out for diagnostic advice from colleagues in every specialty. He found much to learn from expert peers. After retirement from active practice, he continued for several years to attend weekly clinical conferences.
Dr. Doyle was preceded in death in 2019 by his dearest wife of 64 years, Laura Elizabeth (Betty)(Fortescue) Doyle, his brother, Kelvin Doyle, and his brother, Vermont State Senator William Doyle. He is survived by his children, the Honorable Elizabeth Doyle (Edward Horne), Dr. James E. Doyle, Peter C. Doyle, MD (Heidi),Thomas A. Doyle, MD (Melissa),14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Dr. Doyle enjoyed and excelled at tennis, bicycling, and cross-country skiing, and regularly defeated his children in all those sports until his late 70s.
In his later years, he and Betty resided at the Masonic Village of Sewickley. He greatly appreciated the care given Betty during her long illness. He made many dear friends at Masonic Village in recent years, including a special friend, Julia Shaw.
In his career he helped guide many patients and families through the most difficult aspects of life and death with grace, compassion and dignity.
Services will be held at the Masonic Village Assembly Room at 11 AM on Saturday, December 21, 2024 . Interment will be private at the Sewickley Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Sewickley Cemetery.
