David Cattley Obituary

David Louis Cattley 1950-2024

David Louis Cattley was born July 9, 1950. The oldest son of Louis Amos Cattley and Dale Marie Ice Cattley, David grew up in the North Hills of Pittsburgh and graduated from Oliver High School in 1968. David was an employee of the Pittsburgh Public Schools from 1973 to 2011 and was the head custodian of Schaefer (formerly Sheridan) Elementary School. As custodian he was well loved by teachers and staff and loved being able to read to the children and participate in school events on special occasions, including dressing up as a Civil War soldier for Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. David married Mary Dolores Sedlar in 1974 and moved to Moon Township with his family in 1986. A beloved community member, David and his wife Mary were involved in several local churches and community organizations. David was a third-degree master Mason since November 27, 1984, both in Coraopolis and Sewickley lodges. He spent many years volunteering his time with the Boy Scouts with his son John. He also volunteered at Camp Lutherlyn in Prospect, Pa, which he attended as a boy and enjoyed with his own children. In his retirement he enjoyed model trains, vacationing with his wife, player pianos, and classic cars, and won many awards for his 1970 Plymouth Duster which he loved showing at car cruises. Tragically David was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September 2023, and passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Marie, and his beloved brother James Cattley. He is survived by his wife Mary Dolores (Sedlar) Cattley, son John David Cattley and daughter Amanda Mary Cattley, as well as by his brother Robert (Leesa) Cattley of Edmon, OK, and his uncle Donald Cattley of Pittsburgh, who was like a brother to him. Although David and Mary did not have biological grandchildren, they delighted in babysitting and mentoring children in their neighborhood and thought of neighbors Tom and Grace Dry as beloved “grandchildren.” He is survived and was well loved by many dear close friends as well. A hard- working, honest and generous man of integrity, unfailing kindness, good humor, deep faith, and humility, David’s life was an example to us all and he will be greatly missed.

Friends will be received at the Copeland Funeral Home, 867 Fifth Avenue, Coraopolis on Friday from 1 - 4 and 5- 8 pm and Saturday from 10 - 11 AM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11AM.
