Col. John Naughton USA Ret. Obituary

John F. Naughton, a retired Army Colonel died on 5 June 2018 of heart failure at his home in Alexandria, Virginia. He was born October 8, 1941, in Sewickley Valley Hospital a son of the late John L. and Sonja Naughton.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert David Naughton and a sister Mary Jane (Naughton) Walsh.  Colonel Naughton was a graduate of Coraopolis High School.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pennsylvania in 1963 and was commissioned in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant.  He then attended Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he received a Juris Doctor degree in 1966.  In 1971 he received a Master of Laws degree from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois.  He was a member of the Allegheny County and Pennsylvania bar associations since 1967 and was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the U.S. Court of Veterans Appeals, and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.  As an Army officer and lawyer his legal practice was chiefly in the criminal law field as a prosecutor, defense counsel, and as a military trial judge and an appellate judge on what is now the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals.  He retired from the Army after 30 years of service in 1993.  During his military career as a Judge Advocate General’s Corps officer he served in Germany, Vietnam, and Korea, as well as several assignments in the United States.  After his retirement he served as an Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at George Washington University School of Law, Washington, D.C., and as a faculty member of the National Trial Advocacy College at the University Of Virginia School Of Law. His many awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. Survivors include two sisters, Karin Niehoff of Sonoma, California; Catherine Naughton of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a brother, Thomas J. Naughton, of Sherman, Texas; twelve nieces and nephews, and numerous grand nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends at the Copeland Coraopolis Funeral Home, 867 Fifth Ave, on Wed. June 13, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 where prayers will be recited Thurs. at 9:15am followed by a 10 AM  Mass of Christian Burial in Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Frank Kurimsky Officiating burial with full military honors at The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, Pennsylvania.
