Charles “Chip” P. Charlton, III, cherished brother and life-long Neville Islander, peacefully went to meet our Lord and Savior surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Born May 14, 1957, he was the beloved son of the late Rose A. (Weber) and Charles P. Charlton, Jr.
Chip retired after 40 years with Metso Minerals (formerly Dravo) in 2017 and was a life-long member of the Neville Island Presbyterian Church.
While he enjoyed building and selling HO slot cars, meeting friends for a drink, dancing, and smoking a good cigar, his passions were music and sports. Chip played trumpet in the Neville Island and Cornell High School marching bands, along with bass and guitar in the stage band, graduating in the class of 1975.
Being self-taught on the bass, he loved playing jazz-rock and funky soul music in the style of Tower of Power, Chicago, and The Mummies. Chip enjoyed making music that brought people to their feet and was a member of several bands including Jam Nation, Legacy, 3 Dogs, and The Grand Avenue Band. As an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, he rarely missed a Steelers, Penguins, or Pirates game on television, and the opportunity to be an armchair coach.
When he wasn’t making music, you could find him boating on the river as a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Aquatic Club. Chip was always ready to enjoy a party with his fellow Islanders and boat club family.
He is survived by his sister, Carol (Greg) Charlton Slopek; nephews Grant and Travis (Marissa) Slopek, and great niece, Myla Mae Slopek.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the doctors and 5G staff of St. Clair Hospital, Senior Living Advisors, and Gallagher Hospice for their outstanding and compassionate care.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, 4 - 8 pm at R.D. Copeland, 867 Fifth Avenue, Coraopolis, PA 15108. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Neville Island Volunteer Fire Department, 5300 Grand Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15225.
Always “extremely wonderful”, Chip's infectious laughter, legacy of music, friendship, and “Islander” spirit will be deeply missed by his family, and all those who were lucky to call him friend, but God needed him for the band upstairs.
