Bert Lindstrom Obituary

On Sunday June 23, 2024, Bert Roy Lindstrom, age 88, of Scott Township passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.  Born July 11, 1935, at Haddon Maternity Hospital in Ingram, Bert was preceded in death by his parents Carl Theodore Lindstrom and Elizabeth Naomi (Huddart) Lindstrom, his loving wife Linda Lou (Evans) Lindstrom, father and mother-in-law Thomas Evans and Matilda (Grubbs) Evans and brother-in-law Robert Miller.  He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law: Scott (Wendy) Lindstrom, Dexter (Stephanie) Lindstrom, Gary Lindstrom (Christine Napoli), his eight grandchildren Olivia (Michael) Mikula & Theo Lindstrom; Halle, Hanna, Dylan, & Sera Lindstrom; and honorary granddaughters Lauren & Lia Napoli. He is also survived by his sister Caryl (Lindstrom) Miller and his nieces Laura (Ed) Giegucz and Nancy (Michael) Lee.   Bert is preceded and survived by many wonderful in-law family members on the Evans side.

Bert grew up in Beechview on Bensonia Avenue and graduated from South Hills High School in 1953.  He was on the swimming and diving teams and continued to enjoy swimming and diving for most of his life.

He proudly served active duty in the US Army at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri from 1954 to 1956.  He also served an additional six years of inactive duty. After his military service, he attended Duffs Business School from 1958 to 1960 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

Bert met his wife Linda when they worked at the Blaw-Knox company in Pittsburgh.  Linda was a stenographer and Bert was a payroll accountant.  They were engaged on May 21,1960 and married on October 1, 1960.  Bert and Linda moved to Scott Township and purchased a home on Moynelle Drive. From 1963 to 1968, Bert worked and took night classes at the University of Pittsburgh where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree.  After having three boys and needing more room, they purchased a four-bedroom home on Jaycee Drive in 1972.

Bert was self-employed and had a number of businesses including a Whippersnapper Drink Franchise, Wonder Wine, Warner Candy, and Signs Plus.  He worked with many local business owners and built good relationships over the years.

Bert was very involved with South Hills High School Alumni Association and helped with planning their reunions. He kept in touch with many of his classmates and maintained lifelong friendships.  Three of his grandchildren were awarded merit scholarships from the SHHSAA.

Bert played ice hockey for much of his life. He skated at the Duquesne Gardens in the early days of Pittsburgh Hockey. He played in adult leagues in Mt. Lebanon into his 60s. He coached many youth hockey teams including Chartiers Valley High School.

The family spent many summer days swimming, diving, and splashing as members of the Bower Hill Civic League Pool. The kids used to like to watch Mr. Lindstrom do his dives. Bert served as board member of BHCL for some of those years.

Bert was a dedicated, supportive, and generous husband, father and grandfather.  He was always available to help his family at a moment’s notice.  He had an immense love for his sons and their spouses.  Over the years, he enjoyed spending time with the family pets Jessie, Rex, Joey, Casey, Sheba, Targa, Honey, Nina & Shine. The memories we have will last a lifetime and will forever be cherished.

A very special thanks to the aides and staff at Tapestry Senior Living in Moon Township for the excellent and loving care he received over the past few months.

As Bert requested, a private memorial service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Gardens in Cheswick PA where he will be reunited with his wife Linda.
