Barry James McGee, 79, of Sewickley, PA passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. A proud native of Memphis, TN, he was born on November 4, 1944 to Robert and Freddie McGee.
Growing up in Memphis, he played a variety of sports and worked several jobs to further his education. His work ethic and love of learning were evidenced by the various degrees he earned: a BS in Physics from the University of Memphis, an MS in Physics from the University of Tennessee, and an MBA from Alabama A&M University. After graduating from the University of Memphis, he married the love of his life, Ann. They were deeply devoted to each other throughout 56 years of marriage.
Barry began his career at PPG Industries in Huntsville, AL in 1971. After working his way up through the company and holding various positions in glass manufacturing, he eventually became the Vice President of Automotive Glass. He retired after 34 years of leadership, mentorship, and developing business.
Barry had a passion for sports and had a lifelong love of golf. He scored 2 holes-in-one in his lifetime in Memphis, TN and on Hilton Head Island, SC. He was a lifelong learner, reading everything from The Feynman Lectures on Physics to the full catalog of James A. Michener. He greatly enjoyed travel and shared his love of travel with his family.
Barry’s personal life was defined by his love of family and his steadfast faith. He had a gift for connecting with others, a robust laugh and an unmatched sense of humor. Barry was a person who brought out the best in everyone he met and had a true spirit of generosity. Whether it be volunteering for Backpack Buddies of Hilton Head to help provide food to children in need, working with youth or serving Habitat for Humanity over the years, Barry was committed to serving his community.
Barry is survived by his loving wife, Ann McGee, brother, Robert (Suzan) McGee; children Amy (David) Maher and Elizabeth (Joshua) Klixbull; 5 grandchildren Catherine Maher, Arabelle Maher, Anna Klixbull, James Klixbull and Benjamin Klixbull; sister-in-laws Ida Wilford and Eliza Dowell; nephews Jim Wilford, Gary Wilford, Martin Wilford, and Bradley Wilford; and a host of friends who knew and loved him dearly. He was a devoted and proud father and a beloved granddad. He is greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am on August 30th, 2024 at Masonic Village, 1000 Masonic Dr, Sewickley, PA 15143. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on September 14th, 2024 at Six Oaks Cemetery and Park, 175 Greenwood Drive Hilton Head Island, SC 29928
