Alan Hiney, Age 81, of Moon Twp, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9th at his home. Alan was born on February 9, 1944 in Harrisburg, PA to the late Elmer and LeNora Hiney. He grew up in the Harrisburg area where his interest in aviation led to early flying lessons. Alan was hired as a pilot by Allegheny Airlines on April 3, 1967. He ended his career as an international pilot flying the 757 and 767 to London and Germany. Alan retired as an international pilot for US Airways after 31 years due to an incomplete spinal cord injury. Alan was married to his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years to Gail (Ditto). Together they raised two daughters who thought of their dad as a mentor and superhero with the utmost perseverance. Working outdoors, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers football and the Penguins, and spending time with family were some of his favorite things. Alan was a devoted member of Sharon Community Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and was a part of the Wednesday morning Men’s Group. He was also a member of Alcoholic Anonymous where he celebrated 42 years of sobriety and was a mentor to others. Alan is survived by his devoted wife and daughter, Lisa Long (Mike), his sister, Shirley Clack (Bill), beloved grandsons, Christoff and Luke Naylor, brother-in-law Gary Ditto (Dawn), son-in-law David Johnston, 2 nephews, 3 nieces and many longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Lori Hiney Johnston, grandparents, parents and sister-in-law Lois B. Copeland. Alan’s smile, love and tenacity will remain in our hearts. Friends will be received at the R.D. Copeland Funeral Home, 981 Brodhead Road, Moon Twp on Saturday, January 17th from 1pm until time of funeral service at 4pm. Interment will be PRIVATE. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the West Hills Food Pantry, 522 Carnot Road, Moon Twp, PA 15108.
