Edward G. Merkel, age 83, a long-time resident of Neville Island, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at his sister’s home. He was born in McKees Rocks on Dec. 17, 1934, one of five to the late Samuel G. and Ann Jane (Morrow) Merkel. On June 18, 1984, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian K. (Schubert) Pentland Merkel. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings Barbara Luksis, George and Richard Merkel. He is survived by his sister Mary “Dolly” Geyer; step-son Thomas Pentland ; step-grandchildren Thomas A. Pentland and wife Shelly, Terri and Dana Pentland; and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, cousins and extended family. Edward was a servant of the Lord. He was a ruling elder at the Neville Island Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir, acted as volunteer custodian, served as a liturgist for the Sunday service and was a faithful participant in the weekly Bible study. Ed an Air Force veteran, was an avid bird watcher and gardener who loved nature and all of God’s creatures. He loved to sing and harmonize. He was the friendly mailman who worked in the Bellevue Branch 84. Visitation Saturday, September 1, 2018, 2-4, and 6-8 at Copeland’s Coraopolis, 867 Fifth Ave. Everyone is welcome on Sunday, September 2, 2018 for Funeral Service at Noon at the Neville Island Presbyterian Church, 137 First St., Neville Island, PA 15225. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to his church to carry on his earthly mission.
