Charles H. Thorn

Charles "Charlie" H. Thorn passed away suddenly & unexpectedly in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh Pa on Sunday morning, September 22^nd  at the age of 92.

Charlie is survived by his wife Audrey Poppenger-Thorn, (nee Waltonbaugh), his children; Debra C McGinnis of Ladson SC, Charles W Thorn (Susan) of Stockton CA, Allen R Poppenger (Cheryl) of Moon Twp. PA and Patricia Butler of Aliquippa PA.  He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Sister-in-law’s Beverly (Bob) Christner, Arlene Thorn, & brother-in-law’s Richard Waltonbaugh (Trudy Humphries), and William (Kim) Waltonbaugh. He is predeceased in death by his parents Harold & Catherine (nee Sheppy) Thorn. His first wife June L Thorn (nee Stokes), an infant daughter Evelyn S Thorn, son Michael C Thorn, and brothers Harold Thorn, Ronald Thorn, and a sister Betty Kunkle.

Charlie was born on August 22, 1927 in Coraopolis PA. He was a WWII & Korean War veteran. After his military service, he began his career with Capital, which then became United Airlines  as a mechanic in San Jose Ca. He remained in San Jose until his retirement when he moved back to Moon Township in the mid 1990’s.

Charlie was best known for telling stories about his military or airline career, places his lived or traveled, and people he loved. His hobbies included collecting trains, fire trucks, and airplanes. He enjoyed reading westerns and war novels.

 Visitation will be held at Copeland Funeral Home 981 Brodhead Road, Moon Township Pa on Thursday Sept 26^th from 1pm-7pm, with a service by Pastor Bill at 3pm. Cemetery interment will be at a later date at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville PA.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to his wife Audrey Poppenger-Thorn through PNC New Sheffield Branch (Aliquippa), or to the VA Fisher House, a program for Veterans families, www.fisherhouse.org in Charlies name.
