Betty Mann Obituary

Betty Mann died Wednesday, April 18, 2018, of complications following a stroke. She was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Lansdale, Pa., in her parents' home. The family soon moved to Germantown, a part of Philadelphia. Betty graduated from Germantown High School and then Hood College. In 1942, she married Robert Mann, a mechanical engineer. The couple lived in the Philadelphia suburbs, and then settled in Sewickley in 1956, when Bob took over his father's company, Mann Engineering, in Pittsburgh. During all of these years, Betty was a full time wife, mother and homemaker, an avid bridge player and devoted member of Sewickley Presbyterian Church. Betty loved playing golf, and a special Betty Mann Tournament was established at the Allegheny County Club on her 80th birthday and is still held every September. An enthusiastic community thespian, Betty acted in multiple performances of the local 8:40 Group in the 1960s, including "The Man Who Came to Dinner," and she participated in a theatrical review celebrating the centennial of the Allegheny Country Club in her 80s. In their later years, Bob and Betty traveled the world together, visiting six continents. Betty loved nothing more than a good party with dancing, and she celebrated her 80th birthday with one of the best dinner dances ever. She loved to laugh, loved to be with and keep up with all the activities of her large family. She is survived by her five children, Susan Flanders (Bill), Marjorie Mann (Don Baier), Bob Mann (Mary) Tom Mann (Pam Mackesey) and Christina Schmidlapp (Ellis); nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. After Bob Mann died in 2004, Betty continued to live in their apartment on Beaver Street in Sewickley until her final illness. She continued playing Duplicate Bridge regularly, following all Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Penguins and the Pirates. Betty so much enjoyed all her friends, young and old, who assisted and supported her, helping her to remain in her apartment and get around Sewickley until her last days. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at Sewickley Presbyterian Church, 414 Grant St.  Contributions may be sent to: The Sewickley Presbyterian Church, 414 Grant St., Sewickley, PA 15143.
