Albert Brown Obituary

Albert Woodrow “Woody” Brown passed away November 25, 2018 at the age of 78. He was born August 3, 1940 at the family home in Neville Island, Pennsylvania to C.W. Brown and Gertrude (McCue) Brown. He attended Neville Island Elementary and High school, graduating in 1958.

Al served in the United States navy and received an honorable discharge in 1961. He attended college in Pittsburgh for two years at Point Park University, earning a degree in accounting and then transferred to Kent State University to complete a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 1965, he married Donna (Swanson) and moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area. They lived in Cleveland 9 years where Al worked for General Electric, then moved to Pennsylvania in 1974. In 1999, the Browns moved to the Waynesboro, PA area where Al worked for the state. While in Waynesboro, Al was active in the Eagles, VFW and the American Legion.

Al had many interests he pursued outside of work. While living near Cleveland, he began taking flying lessons. He soloed for the first time in 1973 in a single-engine plane. After moving to South Central Pennsylvania, Al purchased a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Each year, he took extended trips on the Harley, with a group of cycling friends.

In 2012, he fulfilled another goal which was to ride in a hot air balloon. The excursion began at Green Grove Gardens where he helped to inflate and prepare it for flight. The flight covered about 10 miles.

In addition to his wife, Donna, “Butch” is survived by his brother James Brown and sister-in-law Gwendolyn (Walker) Brown; his sister Elizabeth (Brown) Matthews and her husband Robert, all of Neville Island. Al is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will have a private memorial service at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your local animal shelter. Arrangements by Copeland’s
