Nelson W. Hughes, a kind and gentle man who loved the Lord, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, May 21, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was born in Coraopolis, on July 6, 1933, one of ten to the late Gilbert and Clara (Meinhardt) Hughes. He is survived by his best friend and devoted wife for 62 years, Phyllis (Bishop) Hughes; loving father of Debra Hughes Lingle (Woody) of S.C., Nelson "Bud" J. Hughes (Lisa Andrasko) and Sandra Furtado all of Crescent; cherished grandfather of Dustin & Shawna Hughes, Jamie Lingle and Taylor Furtado (Kevin) Bair; proud great grandfather of Nevaeh and Payton; brother of Arthur of Hopewell, Jerry (Ruth) of A.Z. and Dale (Ann) Hughes of N.C., and the late Gilbert, Otto, Melvin, Howard, Marion, and Edna. Nelson was a faithful member of Glenwillard Methodist Church who enjoyed his weekly Bible Study and fellowship with his church friends. In 1985, he retired after 28 years as a welder from J & L Steel, Aliquippa Works and went on to work 15 years in the support staff for Moon Area Schools. From 1953-1955, he served in the United States Army. Nelson was happiest in the outdoor; enjoying camping, swimming and just plain sitting on his porch. He will be remembered by the family as making sacrifices for the family. He was a fun to be around and in our memories, we will miss him terribly but will never forget his sense of humor, his smile and his jokes. Visitation Tuesday 4-8 PM at COPELAND’S CORAOPOLIS, 867 Fifth Ave. where service will be held on Wednesday at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Coraopolis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Good Samaritan Hospice, 3500 Brooktree Rd., Suite 320, Wexford, PA 15090. We are grateful for the wonderful hospice care he received and special thank you to Peggy Cooper.
