Gerald (Jerry) Bates of Coraopolis, aged 87, passed peacefully on 9/20/2017.  Jerry was the son of the late Clarence and Belle (Haney) Bates of Coraopolis.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years Anna (Sulzer) Bates, son Thomas, daughter Carol (Eric) Johnson, brothers Dale (Marlene) of Aurora, CO and Don Bates of Oakdale and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother Clarence Wayne Bates and sisters Virginia Bates, Margaret Richert, Betty Kearney, Ruth Bates, and Lois Bosket.  Jerry was a Teamster who drove “big rigs” all over the country for various companies, including Calgon Carbon.  Jerry was an early supporter and volunteer on the Montour trail and was honored for his service by a pavilion at mile marker zero.  He enjoyed attending Cornell High School basketball games with his friends and doing crossword puzzles.  Jerry was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Coraopolis. Viewing Copeland’s Coraopolis, 867 Fifth Avenue on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday at the Presbyterian Church of Coraopolis at 11:00 AM (Please meet at Church). In lieu of flowers donations to the Cornell High School Basketball team or the Presbyterian Church of Coraopolis would be appreciated.
