Obituary

Frank V. Cahouet (age 85) of Sewickley Heights passed away at home on Tuesday June 20, 2017, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. Born May 25, 1932, in Cohasset, MA, son of the late Ralph H. Cahouet and Mary Jordan Cahouet, Frank Cahouet is survived by his loving wife Ann Walsh Cahouet, his devoted children, Ann P. Cahouet, Mary ("Manny") Cahouet-Rotondi, Frank V. Cahouet Jr., and David R. Cahouet, his grandchildren Francis V. Cahouet, III ("Trip"), Ryan J. Cahouet, Emily Rotondi, Alexander Rotondi, Margaret Cahouet, and Emma Cahouet, his daughters-in-law Pamela J. Cahouet and Katherine M. Cahouet, his son-in-law Armando J. Rotondi, and by many nieces and nephews. Frank Cahouet was predeceased by his siblings Father Eugene (Ralph) Cahouet, John Cahouet, Mary Cahouet Fogarty, and James Cahouet. Throughout his life, Frank Cahouet was known for his prodigious work ethic, for his intense focus and determination, his stamina, his gifts as a problem-solver, his vision, and his passion for teamwork. Those who knew Frank Cahouet well were also inspired by his warmth and humanity, his sense of humor, by his devotion to his beloved wife Ann, his children, and members of his extended family, and by his commitment to his Catholic faith and community. Employees who knew him remember a boss who cared about their lives and personal challenges and who was generous with his support and counsel. Frank Cahouet graduated from Milton Academy, Harvard College, and the Wharton Graduate School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania. After spending the first 24 years of his banking career with Security Pacific National Bank in Los Angeles (with a four-year stint at the bank’s office in London, England), Mr. Cahouet took the helm as CEO of Crocker Bank in San Francisco. Frank Cahouet then served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Fannie Mae in Washington, DC, before he accepted a position as CEO of Mellon Bank in 1987. At the time, Mellon Bank was fighting for its survival. Mr. Cahouet served as Mellon CEO until his retirement in 1998, steering the bank to profitability through one of the rockiest chapters in its storied history. From 1987 through 1998, Mellon executed several innovative and industry leading actions such as the creation of Grant Street National Bank ("Good bank / Bad-bank") and the acquisition of the Boston Company and Dreyfus. Mr. Cahouet and his wife Ann fell in love with Pittsburgh, and Mr. Cahouet found deep satisfaction in his commitments to Holy Family Institute, Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh, Little Sisters of the Poor, the Extra Mile Foundation, and other Pittsburgh institutions that serve the needs of people. Mr. Cahouet also served the community as a member of boards that included Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, National Bank Holdings, Teledyne Technologies, Audia Group, and Ambridge Do It Best Home Center. After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Frank Cahouet donated funds to create the Cahouet Center for Comprehensive Parkinson’s Care at Allegheny Health Network, so that he and other Parkinson’s sufferers could find the care they need under one roof. The Cahouet Center opened in April 2016. Frank Cahouet was an active member of St. James Church in Sewickley. He was a uniquely talented and driven visionary with a heart and a generosity that will continue to change lives, long after his passing. His family and friends respected him and loved him dearly. Viewing will take place at St. James Church, 200 Walnut Street, Sewickley, on Monday (6/26) from 6-8 p.m., and Tuesday (6/27) from Noon to 3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. James Church will be held on Wednesday (6/28) at 10 a.m., to be followed by a private interment in Sewickley Cemetery. A gathering will follow at the Allegheny Country Club, 250 Country Club Road in Sewickley.

The family would like to thank Lisa Ferguson and the members of her home nursing team and BNY-Mellon executive assistant Lori Klueber for everything they did to help Frank Cahouet stay productive in his final years. It was this support, in large part, that helped Frank Cahouet continue to pursue his goals and to beat the odds for so long.
