Edis Jean McCann Shiffler Williams was safely carried home to heaven in Jesus’ arms on March 22, 2017 at age 104 and 4 months.  Edis was born November 8, 1912 in New Castle, Pennsylvania and most recently resided in Leesburg, Georgia.

She graduated from New Castle High School in 1933 at age 21 and was captain of her basketball team.  Edis married Harvey Ross Shiffler, Sr. on June 20, 1933 at a small parsonage at the Methodist Church. They made their home in New Castle until the 1940’s, when they and their 2 boys moved to Coraopolis, where their daughter was born.

Edis was Worthy Matron in 1953-1954 of the Fort Vance Chapter of the Eastern Star #550 (which currently is Sewickley Chapter 439).  She won first place for her cake in the Norge Cook and Bake fair.

She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as well as the Quilting Circle at Coraopolis Presbyterian Church on 5th Avenue.  She served on the Election Board from 1950-1957.

Upon the passing of her first husband, Harvey, in 1961, she learned to drive (at age 50) and bought her first car (a Rambler).  She was employed at Sewickley Valley Hospital in the X-ray area as a transporter and filing clerk from 1962-1973.

Edis married Charles E. Williams on June 6, 1970 at the Coraopolis Baptist Church.  They resided in McKees Rocks, PA until “Chuck” passed in 1982. In 1997 she moved to Georgia to be close to her daughter.

She was a member of the Coraopolis Baptist Church.  The family started attending the church in 1940 – 1941.  She walked there (then on State Avenue) with her three children early in their life.  She remains a member still.

Edis was preceded in death by her parents, John H. McCann and Mary Virginia “Jennie” McCann; 4 brothers, George, Charles, John and Jim; 2 sisters Lila McCann Thayer and Wilma Jane McCann Ricker and their respective husbands, Lester and “Hib”; her husband of 28 years, Harvey R. Shiffler in 1961; her second husband, Charles E. Williams in 1982; and son H. Ross Shiffler in 2014.

Her extended family is very close knit. They reunited to celebrate Edis’ birthdays for many years.

Edis left a poem for her friends and family:

             Safely Home

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;

     Oh, so happy and so bright!

There is perfect joy and beauty

     In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,

     Every restless tossing passed;

I am now at peace forever,

     Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly

     Trod the valley of the shade?

Oh! But Jesus’ love illumined

     Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me

     In that way so hard to tread;

And with Jesus’ arm to lean on,

     Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,

     For I love you dearly still.

Try to look beyond earth’s shadows,

     Pray to trust our Father’s will.

There is work still waiting for you,

     So you must not idly stand;

Do it now, while life remaineth –

     You shall rest in Jesus’ land.

When that work is all completed,

     He will gently call you Home;

Oh, the rapture of that meeting,

     Oh, the joy to see you come!
