Amanda Dunn of Sewickley died of a long and courageous bout with cancer on September 21, 2017. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John H. Dunn, Jr.; her children, Barclay Dunn (Adam Gugliciello) of Clifton NJ, John H. Dunn III (Angela) of New Canaan, CT, and Christiana Roussel (Ranson) of Mountain Brook, AL; and four grandchildren: Julianne and John IV, Amanda and Jack Roussel.
Born in Tuscaloosa on February 19, 1940, daughter of Col. Cecil and Amanda Rice, and as an Army “brat” she lived in several locations in the U.S., as well as in Germany and Turkey. She graduated from the Ecole International in Geneva, Switzerland, and from Stanford University, Magna Cum Laude, as well as Phi Beta Kappa. She later gained a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. Amanda married John Dunn on June 23, 1962 at Ft. Sill, OK, and became John’s life-long treasure. She began a career in teaching and school administration, retiring in 1997, as Principal from The New Prospect Elementary School in Fulton County, GA.
Moving to Sewickley Heights in 1997, Amanda taught Aerobics at the Sewickley YMCA and was an avid tennis and paddle player. She also bicycled on tours in the U.S., Central America and Europe. She was active in bridge and book clubs, but her true passions were in the Community Bible Study and her church, St. Stephen’s in Sewickley.
The funeral service will be held at St. Stephen’s at 11:00 AM on Saturday September 30th, and a reception at the church will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to St. Stephen’s Church, 405 Frederick Avenue, Sewickley, PA 15143 or to the Center for Hope, 740 Park Road, Ambridge, PA 15003, which provides major assistance for local need based residents. Both were important in Amanda’s life.
